Well, in the grand scheme of things I proved to myself again that if I stick to my guns and have a purpose in mind I can achieve whatever I want.
I have since lost that last kilo I put on ... and managed to drop a bit more besides. Protein shakes are my hero.
I'm looking forward to getting some more fill in on Monday so I don't have to 'do' it all on my own, but to be honest, even the hunger has since settled. I find I get quite full on the shakes (and the lunchtime bar.)
I had a lovely birthday. Well, actually to be honest the first half sucked. I worked.. and I won't ever work on my birthday again. I was out seeing a client and spoke to Claire at the office at work calling in a small problem they were having. We got around to talking about how the other girls were jetting off to Bali today and I gave a laugh telling her they were off to Bali and here I was choosing to work on my birthday. She was scandalised. "You're working on your birthday? Are you mad? I don't EVER work on my birthday,... ever!" Ok I get it. So nor will I from now on.
By the time I got home mid-afternoon I was actually wishing, apart from the fact it cut so much in to my day (no leisurely lunch out with friends to celebrate.. ) I hadn't for another reason.
I had called in to see a client who I hadn't seen in a month due to the rosters being shuffled around, and left in private tears. This old client who I'm quite fond of has around three weeks to live. Seeing her laying in the bed, yellow, deathly thin and with breathing difficulties really brought it home to me the kind of business I'm now in. It really hit home hard.
I deal with old folk and of course there are going to be deaths but really, it was still unsettling and a shock. Lucky MOTH (Man of the House) was home from work early too and was able to be the voice of reason and a comfort. He made sure the rest of the day made up for the first half. Actually, I was rather spoilt as a whole.
My beautiful two older sons pitched in together and got me a diamond ring. Can you believe that? I remember when the boys were little they would say to me, Mum when I'm older and I go to work, I am going to buy you a diamond ring... and they actually did. I opened the box, took one look inside and snapped it shut again in surprise. I was like.. nooooo, but then .. OMG its SO beautiful. The ring lays flat on my finger, two sides of gold weaving together and the whole top has a flat line of diamonds running from one side to the other. I nearly died.. but i LOVE IT!!
My two youngest got me earings, Riley a purple pair to wear to work, Jake a pretty pink pair for going out, and MOTH gave me the biggest surprise of all.
He ordered this perfume online for my birthday.. one I had been wanting for the longest time. It's called Ed Hardy - Hearts and Daggers. It's just divine. Anyway, I had been fretting as I was hoping it would be here in time for my birthday, and by yesterday (Friday) it was still a no show. So... just in case it didn't get here in time he got me a bottle of Burberry as a backup. It is the most beautiful perfume ever. I just love it.
I am so lucky to have these men in my life. These men who cherish me and spoil me. MOTH also did something else that surprised the life out of me.
Years ago when I was at my heaviest he was trying to help in any way he could to make me feel better about myself. He came up with a monetary value saying to me: if you ever lose the weight there is a pot of gold for you at the end.. money just for you, so you can stock up your wardrobe and spend on whatever you want, not to be spent on anything other than you. To be honest I had forgotten about it. This was about 10 years ago when I was trying one diet after another but never succeeding.
Yesterday I got the surprise of my life when a slim package was given to me. He had followed through. I almost died. So now I have a stash of cash to buy that very expensive handbag i have been coveting and those pale pink high heels that I have also passed by in the shop a million times but would never spend the money on because they cost the same amount as a small country. I will wear them (if I manage to get them) when he takes me out to dinner tonight. Turning 45 actually turned out to be a great day after all. I am blessed.
Love to you all,
Have a great weekend.

wow what a wonderful birthday your boys provided for you. I have almost always worked on my birthday so would have probably done as you did. I am sad that you had to let go of one of your liked patients but I think you and MOTH are right-it is goes with the job in the field you have chosen. I also look at it this way..having you to comfort them at this time of their lives is worth all of it.

ReplyDeleteSounds like you had a good birthday - and you deserve it. I never work on my birthday - and if my birthday's on a weekend I take a workday off as well and spend it doing "me" stuff - highly recommended.
