Had another great week both band and course wise. The second week of the course has definitely been harder than the first as we are in the thick of the theory side of things. Have had some hard-going topics these last few days. Death, wounds, falls, breaks (bones), mental health/depression, alzheimer's and dementia, infection control (eeek to that one - I was quietly freaking out!!!) toileting (we have to keep a poo and urine chart - charmed I'm sure...) and showering, manual handling (using a hoist to move a person) and a whole whack of medical stuff. I never realised we needed to know so much about the human body. Lucky it's a subject I love so I'm finding it really interesting. Still, when you're faced with death (which we will be a lot in this job) it can be heart-breaking and a little daunting. A couple of girls were in tears at the end of the session though not me for a change - usually I'm the biggest sook out - but having already dealt with (and seen) a few dead bodies in the past - it wasn't the biggest deal. Still, the first time one of our lovely elderly residents die, I just know I'm going to be cut up. Hiding my shock and keeping my tears at bay as I help deal with their family is going to be one heck of a challenge.
Off the subject but speaking of shock, we had (well MOTH - Man of the House) had a trip to emergency this week with Riley. He and Jake were play-fighting, Riley did a front flip off the couch and he is now sporting a cast on his arm due to a green stick fracture of his wrist. Kids! MOTH has taken over the role of Mr Mom for the five or so weeks I am flat out learning. (Anyone remember the movie?) He's doing a fantastic job - cooking, cleaning, running the kids around and doing all the stuff I usually cope with. The thought behind this was because he caught a break in the contracting work he does he can look after all the house stuff to free me up to concentrate solely on my studies. What happens with kids and schooling when I'm working full-time and he's back at work too is going to be interesting. It's not something we've had to worry about before. I guess we will cross that bridge when we come to it.
OUCH!
We only have two more days of theory left before we head - next Wednesday - for the start of our Work Experience. I've been placed in a local nursing home (haha sounds like I'm going to be resident there... maybe one day) and luckily, so has one of the other women I am doing the course with. Her and I have become great friends so it will help having each other to lean on, even if we don't see much of each other every day. I went out this morning to buy a couple of pale blue polo shirts, a new pair of black pants and covered shoes for the time we are working in the nursing home. Turns out I'm really crappy at picking the right ones. First pair I got killed my feet after one day (I wore them early to 'break them in') and while the 2nd pair I got today have better coverage and a lower heel MOTH grumbled that they are still not right. I need nurses shoes in black - the kind you see them wearing in the hospital. Good thing I love shoes as I will still manage to get wear out of the mistakes. Third time lucky? - I might drag him out with me. Then there can be no tutting from him with... 'These shoes are going to be useless when you're on your feet all day. I don't care if you have to spend a hundred dollars or more on them... you're going to need a good, solid, pair that will not kill your feet or back. What happens with these flimsy ones when someone pukes on them?' My comeback? I will jump out of the way - and fast!!!!! Not a part of the job I will relish.
Our Motley crew - a great bunch of people. One guy, Dinesh is missing - he's taking the pic. That's Margaret in the pink top on the left and our lecturer Ann in the third row behind the girl in green (her name is Ridwan. She's adorable and a bundle of energy and we have become great friends. I'm really fond of her.) I'm at the back on the right in the sunnies.
Sorry it was such a long post - usually I would blab about all this a few times a week - so thanks for sticking with it. I hope you all have a fab weekend. I am going to kick back for the last few hours of the day - and tomorrow is a study day. I have managed to catch up and comment on almost everyone's blogs and you are all doing famously. Both Sandi-Lee and Nikki were banded this week gone - so good luck girls. Take care of yourself and enjoy the fruits of labour due to come. You're going to love being banded.

Good job in the study's!
ReplyDeletePoor Riley!! But he seems to be taking it ok, he looks in great spirits!! Kids, they just have to learn these mistakes for themselves, no matter how much we try to tell them what can happen!! LOL
And Yes! I do remember Mr Mom! I loved that movie. At least MOTH doesn't have to contend with a baby!! You are so lucky to have such a great DH!
Save some time to relax too!
WOW CARA.. I am exhausted reading your update.. doesn't sound like you have had a minute to yourself.. and your poor boy.. hope he feels better.. I had three brothers and they were always rough housing around, my mom was running to the ER for this or that.. but hope he heals well.
ReplyDeleteYour classes sound so exciting.. would really loved to have some of those skill sets when my DH had his stem cell transplant, they had me flushing infusion lines and all type of home nursing duties (I was just glad I didn't kill him some days). Will you be doing an hospice work with your job? Thank goodness for angels like you... it makes is so much easier on families and caregivers..
I hope you take some time for your self and recharge.. you are only 13 pounds from your goal.. hope you are planning a treat for yourself.. I know you are very busy, but as I always I look forward to your posts. hugs to you.
Sounds like you are having such a good time learning in your course! So happy for you! You are so close to goal skinny lady! Missed seeing you blog, but the long read was a good one. xoxo
ReplyDeleteWow, what a tiring week, particularly the feet... Wonderful that you're losing weight too, almost without having to think about it much. I enjoyed reading about how you're getting on.
ReplyDeleteCaroline
Get those nurses shoes! I'm exhausted just reading about everthing you've had going on! Take care of yourself...poor Riley, boys! I think I had a reserved parking spot at the ER for a few years there! I really enjoyed the update! -BG
ReplyDeleteThe plateau wall has definitely crumbled. You're getting so close, really excited for you. And sounds like the course is going great.
ReplyDeletePoor Riley! Boys and their rough housing, it's unvoidable.
Hope you get a few hours to yourself this weekend!
Poor Guy - Boys!! You are such a busy woman these days...makes me tired just reading all that you are doing - and still losing weight too. You are SUPERWOMAN! :)
ReplyDeleteAwww...poor kid. :( I hope he gets the cast off soon.
ReplyDeleteGood luck in beginning practicum/field work for school!!!
You're so busy mama, but I am so excited for you on your new path! Tell Riley to feel better soon and I hope his arm doesn't get too itchy!

So nice to see your post. You will do so well with caring for the elderly. Don't worry about crying when someone dies. Palliative care is a special calling for people like you. Death is part of life and it is so rewarding to help a person and their family through this period. There are only a few special angels that are able to do this type of work. I spent a lot of time doing this and it was one of my most rewarding jobs-not gruesome or horrible as some would think.
ReplyDeleteRiley will have a ball having all his friends sign his cast (although the novelty may wear off soon). Get ye those good shoes. Many nurses here wear good running shoes to support their feet.
Have a great week. I see it is also already Valentines Day for you so have a romantic one.
You've had a heckuva week, Cara. Poor Riley, it always stinks to break a bone but it particularly stinks during the summer. I hope he's not in much pain.
ReplyDeleteYour course sounds amazing - your writing sounds so energized by all this! I'm sure you're completely exhausted but you do sound wonderful. Get some rest this weekend and tell MOTH he rocks! It's great that you can trade off back and forth - that's an awesome partnership.
Hugs to Riley....
ReplyDeleteSounds like you are having a blast with your studies. That is so great you have support at home! MOTH is a keeper!
Cara- so happy to hear from you! Your week is busy, but you sound happy and not down or exhausted so that means it's good.
ReplyDeletePoor Riley! He looks tough though.
About the shoes have you ever checked out Dansko clogs? I used to wear them when I was on my feet cooking all day. They are very supportive and last forever (and wipe clean).
Take care!
Good to hear from you, Cara. It's great that you are doing so well in your studies. I know you will be a blessing to lots of families in distress. You have such a way with you! :) Have a great week.
ReplyDeleteWow...what a week. I can see your smiling face in that photo. Poor Jake...I hope he is not in too much pain. The study sounds great and you are already going out in the field. Must be intensive. Congrats on the weight loss. 82...can't wait to be there
ReplyDeleteGoodness! Do you sleep?
ReplyDeleteSounds like everything is all good :-) I'll catch up on your blog again after I'm back in the country :-)
ReplyDeletewell hello! the nurses where clogs to work here-either crocs or dansko brand i think. They sure don't look comfortable to me but I guess vomit clean up is easy :)hehe.
ReplyDeleteThe one good thing about being busy is you don't have as much time to think about or are too worried to eat. I hope the weightloss keeps moving!
I have been busted with doughnuts before..they are problematic :) At least you had a cup but where were your ziplocks girl!!!
Aww, Riley is too cute, sorry for his arm.
ReplyDeleteYour course sounds awesome, I'm proud of you and the weight loss is great.
Go girlie!!!
Thanks for the update! You are one busy girl. Honestly, you are going to be such a good nurse. Glad the family is pitching in to help you out, they must love you alot. And, what would a busy time in your life be without at least one broken bone? Can't wait to hear more as you have the time.
ReplyDeletePoor Riley....although I bet it was a great "icebreaker" to start the school year with!! I am like the others and feel tired just reading about what you have been up to!!!! Of course you will get attached to some of the residents.....but that is what will make you good at your job:)
