Well, seriously, how easy was that! I must admit to feeling a little apprehensive as pain for one person is usually not the same for another. But as first fills go, it was just fine. Got to Dr Couch's office on time and as usual, I was in within five minutes. He's good like that. Had a smile when he got patients mixed up, apparently two Cara's sitting in the waiting area, but once we had that sorted I was taken into the room pronto. He weighed me - I have lost 14.3 (there's that sneaky kilo though I was surprised because I was weighed with clothes on and not nekkid or with just knickers on like I do at home so I must have lost some of the weight I put on.. hurrah!).
He also mentioned that he had set my target at 90 kilos and I was already two thirds the way there so I will have no trouble surpassing that considering I hadn't even started this whole journey until today.. (say what!! lol) and that I was a star patient. Me, a star patient? How's that for a little self delusion on his behalf!!
Anyway, that over he sat me down and asked quite a few questions about how hungry I had become and how much I was eating. I said that I had pretty much stuck to the one cup rule (though I could definitely eat more and sometimes did) and we judged that I was having about 250 - 300 mls at most meals with very little snacking in between. He seemed happy with that. Then its needle time!!!!!!! YOIKS!! (That went through my head, not actually what I went through!!)
He put a pillow down on the table about a third of the way down and I was thinking, 'What am I, vertically challenged?' Then the penny dropped. The pillow was for under the small of my back. So I wriggled on, the whole time chattering nervously about how I used to get freaked out over needles and how MOSTLY having four kids had cured me of that.. and yet I still get nervous to some degree. He busily prepped at his end and then swung around and this is where I closed my eyes. NO way did I want to get a glimpse of that thing. Dr Couch felt around on my tummy and I mentioned I was curious as to where my port was placed as I had tried and failed to find it myself (for the record... it's about three inches under my scar and just slightly to the left about a half inch under my belly button.. that was a surprise, I had been looking in the wrong spot the whole time lol.)
Now the fill.......... I swear....... and I say this as a slightly nervous needle phobic woman - it was nothing more than a mozzie bite. I felt the tiniest sting and kept up the chatter while I felt him doing his 'thang' and then he slapped on a bandaid and said, "Right, that's you done." The whole thing took no more than 20 seconds tops. He swung around and added, "Okay, this is the needle I just used, want to see?" I slapped my hands over my eyes and quavered, "NO WAY! Don't even think about it." He gave a laugh. "Next time I will used a smaller guage. No need for this one next time anyway."
I sat back down and drank a half cup of water he gave me... went down no problems and asked if I had to be on fluids or mushies for a few days. "Just soft foods until tomorrow," he answered, "And if you have no problems getting it down then just go back to normal foods as of tomorrow." WHOO!
So all in all, a darn fine visit. I go back to see him in three weeks where he will give me another mill. Oh, and apparently I had around a mill already in there when I was first banded but he said he doesn't count that. So now I am at two mills.
Okay, now I have to head out with MOTH and do a food shop. How's that for ironic.
Bye for now,
Cara

Awesome - I am glad it went smoothly - don't be worried if you don't feel any restriction cos it takes at least a couple of fills (sometimes more depending on how much your surgeon is putting in)
ReplyDeleteOk, so the whole metric thing is not easy in my head, can you tell us in pounds how you're doing? What is the goal and where are you at? What is a mill?..oh wait, milligrams in the band? Got it. Well, great job and thanks for making it sound so easy for the rest of us, I will come back and look at your post when it's time for my first fill! Have a lovely weekend.
ReplyDeleteWow, I sure hope my first fill goes that smoothly! Sounds like you are doing a little better than yesterday? Hopefully the doctor telling you how good you are doing will sink in and make you feel good for a while ;)
ReplyDeleteThats awesome Cara! I get my 2nd fill today!!! it is easy peasy Im excited to get it, I need it. lol
ReplyDeleteYeah! I am glad it went to well! I thought my port was under my big scar the whole first 6 weeks after surgery. I was totally wrong too. I still cant feel the damn thing even though I know where it is located!
ReplyDeletemmmm. I must remember to ask the doc where my port will be? Your a star patient, woot woot....you are doing so well already and only just started the journey...you go girl!!!! You must be feeling fab!
ReplyDeleteCara- I'm glad things went so well! I can't wait until the 16th for mine. I never really thought about where my port was - I just assumed it was right under my scar like Amy said. I guess we'll see...
ReplyDeleteI'm glad you're in better spirits.
You are a star! Listen -- if by chance this fill doesn't get you where you need to be, just go back again as soon as your doctor will let you. I hope you got the most out of Bandster Inferno, b/c it's now a thing of your past (or soon-to-be-past if you still need a wee fill)!
ReplyDeleteCatherine
Thats great news Cara - I am freaked by needles too so I understand the whole reaction haha
ReplyDeleteJust catching up on all the blogs!! I have been slack as lately. I am so pleased your fill went without incident and it didn't hurt!! I got a shock with my first fill too....didn't even feel the fill :)
ReplyDeleteMake sure you get back reasonably quickly if you don't think you are "tight" enough....why suffer!!
I am back in three weeks Nola, but I don't think I have any restriction. Running - again - on willpower alone.. grrrr. Should I call and get in earlier?
