Have you ever looked at a gravestone? On it you will find the date a person was born - and the date that person died. In between is a dash. This small symbol signifies a persons whole existence. When it comes time for my dash to be chipped in, I want to know I lived a full and wondrous life.

Hello new restriction......

Well, no complaints about a lack of restriction from me. I am well and truly back in the land of those who can't get much down. Not that it's a bad thing - but this last .25 mls I got on Monday has well and truly done the job.

I was actually a bit worried come Monday night. I had a burning in the back of my throat when eating and I managed about a half cup of food and that was it. Then came the stomach ache. A deep ache right in my gut that went after a bit (I think I pushed the food portion limit to, oh, maybe  two thirds of a cup.. pfft.) This carried on Tuesday and just when I'm thinking, 'Uh oh. I'm going to have to go in to get a touch of fill out,' it went. Yesterday was fine and today has been the same. I still can't get in more than a half a cup at one sitting though and eating is laborious. Talk about slowing me down.

I am also suffering from a severe backache. What the? I never, ever suffer a sore back. I might get the odd twinge if I've slept funny, but so does 99 percent of the population. This was/is something different. It's low down, making me stoop to distribute my weight and when I stand for too long, argh... my lower back screams. It felt a little better yesterday, and waking up this morning, better still, but as the day is going on, I'm not starting to wonder if it's actually my hip. Referred pain and all that.

When Jake was a baby - so I'm talking about 13 years ago - I took a severe tumble off a galloping horse. I was a good rider, but this was one of those stupid freak accidents. My sister-in-law and I hired a couple of horses and went for a trail ride. We hit the open plains and decided to give the horses their heads and off they galloped. I leaned to the left to compensate a large tree looming in front of me, the stirrup snapped and down I went in a tumble of limbs. Long story short, the docs were worried. I couldn't move my legs for hours and when I finally did, it turned out not to be a spinal injury but I had compacted my hip. Don't forget - I was rather a large girl too, so that's a lot of weight to take on one hip at a fully flat out rate from a certain height. Anyway, the hip aches now and again when I lay for too long on that side, and just today, I feel it throbbing. Cannot for the life of me think what I did to bring this on though. Day to day stuff has just been normal.. nothing out of the ordinary.

I hope it goes soon though because I am due for orientation next Friday - a week today. It's an all day thing (paid) learning how to do my new job and manual handling in the afternoon. I rang to inquire about what time I'm due to start (oh, the contract came through too and it was written in black and white - I start on a Sunday) and the co-coordinator who I have been in contact with at the home said, "Why do they have you starting on a Sunday? You don't want to start on a Sunday, do you?" I was about to reply, its no bother, though it's unusual, when she switched it to the Monday for me. So Monday the 19th of April it is. Cool.

That's it for me today. Just wanted to touch base. Kids start their first lot of school holidays as of tomorrow (Good Friday.)  Happy times.
Stay safe, speak soon and enjoy your Easter break. I know I will.
PS Watch out for the chocolate monster and I will do the same.

  1. Great to hear that you have restriction - sad to hear about your back :-(

I get a very sore lower back and one stretch that really helps me is to lie on my back, put my hands behind my knees and pull them as far as I can towards my chest.

Hope it gets better soon :-)

  2. I'm jealous of your restriction at the moment and am wondering whether it was a mistake to get any fill out at all.

But then I look at my comparison pics and realise I was the same weight now that I was just before I fell pregnant so it is not that big a deal......but I wish i could stop the mind games and chocolate bingeing :-)

the 19th is going to be a great day

  3. I had a bad horse accident like you! Hey, we've got something in common there. heh.

If you've damaged your hip in the past it sounds like you might be out of alignment... of course I'm not a doctor, but I'm a seasoned back pain sufferer. I know a really great musculoskeletal specialist in Mt Hawthorn (miracle worker, seriously.. and you can claim him on medicare because he's also a GP), but that might be a bit of a hike for you. Let me know if you want his details anyway.

I'm glad your restriction has sorted itself out.. just in time for Easter!

Happy Easter to your and yours xxx

  5. woohoo-restriction is back..that is great. Can you get into see a doctor about the back pain? You probably need something looked at before you go lifting people or helping them on your new job won't you? They do some great drugs for back pain :) have taken them...the swelling goes right down and the pain goes away.

    Good luck...heal quick...and happy losing.

  6. Oy. Sorry about the aches and pains-- and that the band is another adjustment even for my Dashy hero at THIS stage. Lordy.
I'm glad your work starts on a Monday, that is a GOOD sign of a reasonable supervisor. That makes a huge difference as you surely know.

Just a thought-- the back pain could be referred diaphragm (spelling?) pain due to your eating episode. If so, this should pass shortly-- the body has a crazy memory and pain often 'refers' to old injured spots, at least that is my official 'clinical' opinion from way back when I was an OT.

    Feel much better soon. xo

  7. Oh Man, Cara! I had never had a back ache either until this past january. Mine was attributed to exerise. It took 3 weeks before I felt better. Hopefully, yours is what you think and will gradually dissipate before you start work on the 19th!

I'm glad you have restriction but hope you do not encounter any problems during the Easter weekend, you know how problemsome those chocolate bunnies can be!

    Enjoy!

  8. Cara, that sounds awful! A sore back is no fun. Have you been able to talk to your doctor? Maybe an anti-inflammatory might help, or just a heating pad or something. I really hope you're able to relax over the weekend (ha!) and feel better so you're all ready for the 19th. So excited for you!

  9. Ooh, I'm suffering from a bit of back pain myself. Think it's from the running. Seems to be better today, but I may hit the chiropractor tomorrow if it's still twingy. Glad you've got some restriction back!! When are you coming to visit us in NYC? I feel like a trip is in order!! xoxo

  10. Back pain is the worst (I'm sitting here on a heating pad now). Hope it clears up soon before the job starts!

I'm jealous of the great restriction right before the holiday...those chocolate bunnies are the devil's work! I'm just hoping this increased restriction I have after the surgery stays awhile!

Oh and, the 'Bitch' wine is from your part of the world! You'll have to get some for the next time you have GF's over LOL!

    Happy Easter!

  11. Good restriction just in time for Easter! Yay!

So sorry about the back pain. If it turns out to be plain old back pain from nothing in particular....Pilates really helps. Hope it feels better!

    Happy Easter!

I am working my way through reading your entire blog. I'm in June '09 territory right now. Just wanted to check in and let you know I'll be an active follower from here on. It's been a pleasure reading your blog, so far. I always love the human perspective of the band and yours is quite colorful!!! Love it!

  16. Sorry to hear about the pain. Maybe it's all the recent standing and running around you've been doing with your training and all that? Maybe your hip's just tired. LOL. Hope you feel better.

  23. Yea for the restriction! Can I have some of yours?

So sorry to hear about the back pain though!

I know how you feel, I have lived with lower back pain (not to mention the upper back pain too) almost my entire life, pretty much since I fell off the top of a swing set at age 8-9, flat on my back!

I too couldn't move my lower body either! The bad part was, we were being baby sat, and my parents never knew about the accident until I told them a few years ago, they almost had a heart attack!!!

Anyway, I have had major pain in my lower back and legs ever since. I recently found out that I have a pinched nerve in the lower back, so maybe this could be part of your problem too?

    Hope you feel better soon!
