Have you ever looked at a gravestone? On it you will find the date a person was born - and the date that person died. In between is a dash. This small symbol signifies a persons whole existence. When it comes time for my dash to be chipped in, I want to know I lived a full and wondrous life.

Mamma mia - what a dilemma - to fill or not fill

So I went to see Dr Couch and Angela, my dietition this morning. Foodie gal was up first at 9.20am, and all went well.. I have finally figured out why I actually see her ('cos trust me, I was wondering!) She is there (at least at my best guess) to help with each stage of the band. For those who think I'm a little slow on the uptake, I honestly don't think that I have been getting too much out of the appointments.. at least not a lot more than I didn't already know... cos I'm a know-it-all you see lol.

This morning the light bulb went on. She handed me another sheet with do's and don'ts and there was some good info on there.. most of the stuff was plain common sense but there was some things on there that were good for reminders like eating minced foods with sauces.... only eat soft cuts of beef/lamb in wet dishes... choose chicken drumsticks and thighs...(though she did say I could try steak during summer providing its a VERY tender cut and I chew the living daylights out of it....) and after each fill, reduce your portion sizes slightly.. just general stuff.... but all in all..  $45 dollars semi-well spent.

Dr Couch? Hmm now there's another whole different kettle of fish. I went in thinking.. ok.. so I went away for a few weeks and yes, I had some troubles (self-inflicted I know). Do I get a fill today or try and coast on a bit longer, because right now, where I am is actually not too bad. I found I have lost 7 kilos in 8 weeks according to him, so I must be doing some things right... but admittedly I'm still a little wonky on finally giving up those things I really, really love.. one especially is toasted Turkish bread! Our conversation went something like this....

Dr C: So tell me, how have things been eating wise this past few weeks?
Me: Oh, not too bad ... it's been ok....you know, surviving.... (hedging my bets because I  know JUST what's coming next...but don't really want to fess up)
Dr C: You have any problems? Reflux, heartburn, spitting up, getting stuck.. anything like that....?"
(Oh, bugger!!)
Me: I got stuck a few times ... I think that last fill really kicked it in the butt.
Dr C: Define a few times. Once, twice, or more...?
Me: Probably three times, but one was really bad... I was away on holiday so my meals were a little all over the place and I ate out a fair bit
Dr C: Ok.. sounds reasonable.. so what did you eat that made you get stuck?

Me: Ahhh, might have been the sausage I had.. yeah, I think definitely it was the sausage
Dr C: (Almost gives himself whiplash as he turns to glare at me) You know sausage is on the forbidden list.....
Me: And now I know why... it was a bad stick.. I was not a happy camper
Dr C: Ok.. what else? What was the next food that made you get stuck?
Me: Um...... Crumbed chicken?
Dr C: Are you asking me or telling me?
Me: ( Sigh.......) telling you... it was crumbed chicken.
Dr C (another glare) Any sauce on it?
Me: ..................no.......maybe........ ok... no
Dr C: Another forbidden food. If you have dry food you must have sauce.
Me: (enthusiastic nodding)  Got it now...... well and truly!
Dr C:  And the third?
Me: (cringing) Bread
Dr C: (silent sigh..... but definitely there) Did the bread snap?
Me: Ah, no .. but it was snappy on the outside
Dr C: Ok .. If you have bread that's toasted it must be thin enough to snap.. no snap.. don't eat it.. OR scoop out the soft bit inside.
Me: Scoop inside out.. ok got it.
Dr C: .......(hands me a sheet) Ok.. here's the list of do's and dont's again. Read it.. Learn it.. Know it inside out.
Me: I do like 90% of these things here on the sheet.... it's number three I had trouble with...
Dr C: And what did I say to you in the beginning.. No 1, 2, and 3 were THE most important rules... EAT SLOWLY..........Take a small mouthful and chew well...Avoid steak, sausages, plain chicken breast and bread. You manage to get stuck on three of those foods.... and now you know why they are not allowed. Are you sure you want a fill today? Because I think you need a few weeks to rein yourself in and become a little stricter. You cannot eat these things now.. In fact... I just had a lady in before you this morning... and I had to un-fill her because she had pizza stuck. (Looks at my food sheet) Oh ok.. I see you had pizza on Sunday also...........

As you can see by the above conversation I was like a naughty school kid who had been doing stuff she shouldn't and I got reamed for it!! Holy moly.. I felt like I was 10 again.. but then again.. I guess I can't accuse him of not taking notice or not doing his job, can I? That was a rhetorical question by the way - no answer needed lol.

In the end I walked out without a fill after dithering over the decision for a few full minutes.. yes, I will.. no, I won't.. Oh, damn.. but I want one..... but I don't want to get stuck again 'cos a half ml makes a MASSIVE difference.. ok.. no fill this time.

He steers me to the front door and says as I leave...Make an appointment for a months time to come back and see me for that next fill... HA! Inya face Dr Couch!!! (snaps bubblegum!)...........I made the booking for three weeks.

  2. LOL, I can just imagine you having that conversation with your doc....I wish my doc would have given me a sheet, mine basically says I can eat whatever I want as long as I chew and I have not seen a dietician...

Cara, can I ask a favour? Could you email me a copy of your do's and don't sheets, I wonder if this will help me a little...I would really appreciate it... thanks!

Three weeks will get you back on track with food and then a fill up.....you can do it!

  3. As I was reading, I totally thought that conversation was imagined. It was real!!!??? Wow! That guy is something else. But it is sort of cool how he is telling you exactly what to do...not being wishy-washy, that's for sure!

So glad to have you back & thanks for your kind comments about the jeans!

  4. Whoa, he wants to lay on the guilt trip, huh? Did it work? I like that, "So you've had sausage, breaded chicken and pizza, hmmmm..." Ah, to have sausage again... I say, not worth it. I'm so worth losing the weight and I've had plenty of food to last a lifetime..haha. Hang in there, only a few weeks, then you'll get your fill!

  6. Cara - You are too funny. Had me totally laughing at this one. I also see a dietition and always leave thinking...tell me something I don't know. But then again, like you, I have the "know it all" problem.

  7. I think, Robyn, by the ages we are now.. we pretty much know the do's and dont's of dieting and what is healthy and what's not etc .. following through with it is the hard part! lol

  8. I so agree! We know what to do but following it is the hard part. BUT, I think as we find that we CANNOT tolerate those foods, we will have no choice but to follow most of the time. His list of "don'ts" really helps!
