Have you ever looked at a gravestone? On it you will find the date a person was born - and the date that person died. In between is a dash. This small symbol signifies a persons whole existence. When it comes time for my dash to be chipped in, I want to know I lived a full and wondrous life.

I got me a fringe - and other benefits

So yesterday I got proactive.. extremely proactive. After putting it out there how down I was about my hair (okay, hardly a 'world' problem..  but in the small scheme of things it's important to me....) I got out there and decided to do something about it. First thing I did was some research on the net.

I found that hair loss is common after surgery - ok we all know that.. and if we didn't we do now. Second thing I found out (and thanks Catherine and those girls who put me on the right track) I found out there's a nice little vitamin extract we need in healthy doses in our body to keep things ticking along nicely. It's called BIOTIN. Biotin is important for healthy nails, skin and hair. What is Biotin? Basically it is a vitamin - vitamin H in fact. Here is a little about it if you are interested:

Biotin, as referred to as Vitamin H is part of the Vitamin B complex group and might be interesting to some people since one of the most visible symptoms of shortage of this vitamin is thinning of hair which can lead to total hair loss. This does not mean that baldness is a sign of Vitamin H in short supply - severe hair loss might just be indicative of biotin being deficient. But many medicine companies are using this in their medicines which are used for the hair growth and hair treatment. Biotin is found in various foods, including liver, cauliflower, salmon, carrots, bananas, soy flour, cereals, and yeast. Biotin content of food is reduced by cooking and preserving.

So obviously this is just an overview. Basically we are not lacking Biotin as a whole - we just need a boost of it. So after some searching and armed with some facts I hit the shops. The first thing I did was visit Hair House. This place has more shampoos, conditioners and treatments than you can shake a stick at. I talked to one of the girls and she recommended a certain product. It's called Nioxin.

This is Nioxin - a shampoo (smells heavily minty) a conditioner (smells like eucalyptus) and the small bottle is a scalp treatment. It gets rid of all the nasty chemical buildups we have put in our hair over the years and works on the hair follicles which is where healthy hair starts. You spray it over all your head close to the roots after shampooing and conditioning, massage it in (it tingles a touch) and leave it in. Simple.

Ok, so armed with some good information but still not convinced this was the answer to my prayers regarding my thinning, frizzy, nasty hair I then headed to the hairdressers... and got the chop!!

I had that long sweeping fringe cut into something shorter and had about three inches taken off the back. I wanted to get rid of anything resembling 'bad hair.' It feels weird being so short again (it's just below my shoulders now) but I'm willing to do anything to bring it back the way it once was. So......

While I was getting my hair done I chatted to the girl about my problem. Without being prompted but after telling her which store I had just visited and was looking into their products she said, "Did you get Nioxin? It's absolutely fantastic. You need to give it about a month but should really see a difference in the thickness and overall health. It will also stop your hair falling out." Sold! So I waltzed back out after the cut but not before buying something for the state of my hair right now...

This is a hair mask for distressed hair. Mine actually came in a tub not a tube but it's the same thing. Basically I use it once a week, leave it in for five to fifteen minutes and wash it out. I used it for the first time this morning. It's quite fluid yet sticky and reminds me of pvc glue lol. It did do the trick though. My hair is soft and more manageable this morning with hardly any frizz (damn that curly hair.. I should probably stop blow drying it straight - it never stays that way anyway!!) I then headed back to Hair House to buy the Nioxin and I went to the chemist to pick up a bottle of something to work from the inside out. I ended up with Blackmores Nails, Hair & Skin tablets with a 'clinically trialed dose of biotin.' Think I have all the bases covered now. If this doesn't help, nothing will. All this now means I have a new hair routine ever few days. My recommendation to those girls who haven't yet started losing their hair is to get a jump on the hair tabs. Buy something to stop that horse bolting - maybe look into the Blackmores product. It sure can't hurt.

Ok before I go I just wanted to quickly update about this fire. As you can see I'm still here - phew - and my worries were fairly unfounded. It was very odd to wake up again today to see the orange sky, grey haze and spookier sun but (and thanks Emma for letting me know what was going on.. Em is another Perth-ite and had a handle on what was going down with the bushfire.) Turns out this fire is MILES away - 130 Km's in fact near a town called Harvey - but was yesterday burning away 4000 hectares of bush. Weird how we had the fallout here - must have been wind conditions - something to do with the smoke being trapped in hot air and hovering. It was gone an hour or two later yesterday but today is still hanging around at the time now.. 9.30am.

  1. Cara, this is great! And, way to go on being so proactive! I've heard good things about Nioxin, and hope it does just the trick for you. I love the bangs -- very fashionable and cute!

  2. Love your hair!!

I am planning on cutting my hair in February or March at the latest, as I have very thin/fine baby hair & the longer it gets the worse it looks. LOL.

I finally convinced my DH that I should cut it. He hates short hair, but unfortunately, mine looks horrible long. And my hair is naturally "bone" straight. In order to have any body or curl, I have to perm it.

Since I will be losing my hair as it is, I am afraid to perm it for a while, which means that my hair will look even worse long!! Hence me getting to cut it!

So maybe I should look into some of these products as well!!

Glad to hear the fires aren't an issue for you anymore. :)

  6. It seems that gals with curly hair want straight hair, and gals with straight hair want curly hair! My hair is naturally very fine and straight. As a reward for weight loss and exercise, in February this year I took the plunge and had my straight blah hair trimmed and permed into curly locks! I love it and plan to keep it this way for quite a while. I use an intense conditioner by Pantene called Restoratives; am really happy with it. I'm glad you seem to be finding a possible solution to your hair worries. Take care.

  8. You look beautiful of course! I have heard of biotin, but also heard that if you have hair problems elsewhere, like too much on your FACE (like me), it can cause an increase in that too...and lord knows I dont need any help in the whisker department!

  11. Looking good lady! I like the cut a lot. I'm thinking of looking at biotin as I can't stand the wake of hair I leave around the house.

  12. I have heard great things about Nioxin. What products did you get exactly? They have so many to chose from, I have no idea which ones to get, any advise would help. Thanks for the info.

  13. The hair is cute! And thank god you guys are okay! I know a lot of lapbandsters try Nioxin or Biotin, so I hope it works for you. So far it isn't a problem for me b/c I have horribly thick curly hair so now it's just down to a normal thickness.
