Isn't it funny how two Doctors can be so vastly different.
Yesterday I turned up for my fill appointment (yeeehaaa!!!) and properly met for the first time, my new doc. This doc is chatty, and friendly, and was more than happy to answer any questions at length I had including those I didn't ask lol. Seriously, he was great. It seems Dr Couch has abandoned the sinking ship - at least metaphorically. He is now only taking on new patients who are to be banded as well seeing them through the first couple of appointments thereafter - the rest is up to Dr Hill (that's my new doc's name!) So my new doc: chatty, sweet natured, doesn't have to have his teeth pulled before he answers a question.... all great things... except for the fact he still kills me when he gives a fill... oh noooo! Okay, hes not THAT bad, but compared to Dr Couch who is quick and virtually painless, I feel Dr Hill's stickers.
When he was asking me the usual questions: reflux? No, I answer, none of that. Restriction? Nope, none of that either, lol. Hungry? All the time (BIG sigh........) Pb'ing? Um... yeah.. actually, quite a few times over the course of the six or so weeks. Damn!! That had the potential to be my downfall. He wasn't keen on giving me any more fill - but after a little to-ing and fro-ing and a bit of wheedling from me he opted to give me .25 of a ml .. (or cc as some of you know it.) He was standing there squinting in front of the computer, one hand waving around a syringe while he tried to work out what size needle he used last time. Large? (verrrrry long) or small? (short and stumpy.) I said short, most definitely short!!! He was still undecided. "Hmmm, but I'm not so sure.. as I can't really feel your port terribly well."
"That's because I'm not standing up," I say. "Standing up I can feel it plain as day."
Still a non-believer, he fiddle-farts around some more until I say, "Come back here and bring your short needle". He mosies over: I am flat out on the table, pillow under my back.... I lift my feet, clench my tummy muscles and voila!
"Oooh, look at that," he says. "I can feel it plain as day now. Nifty." (Does this sound vaguely like a porno script with word replacement? lmao!) I now have 5.25 mls in my band. Slowly but surely creeping up.
I was out and about this morning Christmas shopping with my mother-in-law who came down to spend a few days with us in time for MOTH's (Man of the House's) birthday and we decided after some hard bargain shopping to stop and have an early lunch. We both ordered a small chicken Caesar salad from Sumo Salads (a great little salad bar at the food court) and lo and behold... I only managed half before recognising that familar feeling in my throat...one more bite and it's PB time..... so I stopped. Last week I had one of these small salads too, but unlike today, I ate the whole thing and not slowly either lol. Yay for the quarter ml. It seems to have nipped the hunger in the bud and I have done really well with my food today. My next appointment is for three weeks time.
I have also - according to his notes - lost 4 kilos or around 8.8 pounds in the six weeks. He was really happy with that.... telling me I had 'smashed' Dr Couch's original 23 kilos loss water bench mark - that's the big picture loss he expected me to lose in around 18 months.. pffft to that.. I have surpassed it in only 6. I'm kind of stoked about that though I did already know I had done it due to my own charts.
Yesterday after the fill, MIL, MOTH and I went out to lunch (smart.. NOT as I was only on mushies for 24 hours!) and we ended up at this little restaurant called Capprici's. Anyone here in Australia may or may not recognise the name. This year there was this great T.V. show called Master Chef. One of the contestants from Western Australia was called Trevor.... this is the same Trevor of the "I thought using bait in a recipe was a really good idea at the time" fame lol.
Trevor and his wife brought this restaurant here in the town where I live where he has installed himself as Head Chef (and he promises he doesn't use bait in his menu!!) We hadn't yet had a chance to eat there until yesterday. Not a bad little place.. food was okay. I really wanted the mussels but apparently they are popular on the weekend and they were all out (I was just going to eat the garlic tomato chilli side of it.) I gave him a bit grief over it (jokingly!) and he promised that if I call first next time he would ensure there were some in store. A while later I ended up having a conversation in the loos with his wife. She was in there scrubbing out the bathrooms because according to her, no one else would do it! Don't blame them. Cleaning bathrooms and toilets isn't high on my list either lol. Not ten minutes before I saw her poring over the computer doing something or other with Trevor - then she's cleaning. Talk about Jack of all Trades in the restaurant biz.
Well, I'm off to rest my weary feet. I haven't stopped moving since about 6am this morning and I'm buggered. Hope you're all doing well, catch you again soon.

Yay Cara-- you rock, awesome weight loss in 6 weeks and I'm glad you got a bit of extra fill, I'll bet it will make you loads more comfortable.
ReplyDeleteI like how you told Dr. Hill how it is!!!
Hope you got your rest, we cannot have you buggered senseless b/c then we cannot see your lovely blog posts. :-)
See, & you thought you weren't losing weight!! You did great! I saw my Surgeon today & he said that I have somewhere between 2-2 1/2 cc's of fill from the Surgery. He will probably give me 3 more cc's at my first fill which will (hopefully) be on December 28th. Assuming I answer the questions correctly!! Wink Wink LOL.
ReplyDeleteOh that is exciting - mixing it up with the almost celebrities LOL
ReplyDeleteI hope your fill stays well :-)
WOOHOO for a fill speeding your towards your sweet spot. :)
ReplyDeleteAnd double woohoo for smashing the weight loss goal your doc set. What do they know anyway?!?! ;)
Amy
Hey lovely- good news on the fill. I hope Dr. Hill improves his sticking technique (more porn inspired entendres!) soon, for your sake!
ReplyDelete6lbs in 6 weeks is very good.
Funny to run into that TV contestant in his new restaurant in your town. I love when stuff like that happens- makes life a little more sparkly!
Go You for smashing the weight loss goal. And 8.8 lbs in 6 weeks is awesome. My scale and I are not friends this week. For some reason he is not wanting to go down!!! Anyway its not a race as I say for the 10 millionth time.
ReplyDeleteCongrats on the successful fill and going above and beyond the Doc's weight loss goal! That has to fee great :)
ReplyDeleteYahoo!! You've done great these last 6 weeks. Good for you. Glad to hear you're right back on track. Hearing about how things are going for you, really helps me learn what to expect and how to interpret things. I really appreciate all the things you write in your blog.
ReplyDeleteI'm glad your new doctor is friendly, it really does make a difference. And congrats on the loss, awesome!
ReplyDeleteWow, 8.8 is really great! (Hehe, a rhyme) Keep it up chica! :)
ReplyDeleteSweet Cara, lovely for you and the loss. You'll have the new doc in line in no time! Have a restful eve!
ReplyDeleteI meant to comment on this yesterday. I'm glad you like the new Doc. I feel the same way about the nurse practitioner I see vs. my surgeon. I just feel like she takes more time to talk to me and answer questions. She's a lot better at giving the fills then your new guy. :)
ReplyDeleteYour loss is amazing - I'm so happy for you.
