Have you ever looked at a gravestone? On it you will find the date a person was born - and the date that person died. In between is a dash. This small symbol signifies a persons whole existence. When it comes time for my dash to be chipped in, I want to know I lived a full and wondrous life.

Poop!

I'm not talking about that kind of poop but more the one you stamp your foot at when you're frustrated with yourself. I have managed to put on a little this week. I seem to do fine until about 2pm and then it's like its open season on eating. I've had a really tight band AM so I'm thinking perhaps the fact I can actually eat and keep food down in the afternoon might be the reason I'm grazing so much.

I need to get back to basics. Tell me what those are again, girls 'cos I'm floundering? I don't know if its because I've come to a sudden screaming halt from being flat out for so long to having the next week off here at home while I wait for things to happen again but suddenly I seem to have given myself carte blanche to snack  - and I hate it... it's really not me. I've been so focused for so long and now... well, I feel control slipping and it's freaking me out a little. My skirt feels a little tighter this morning and I can't seem to take a breath... help!

  1. Calm down! We've all been here I promise. Try having some healthy snacks at hand so that when you do get hungry in the arvo you reach for those rather than crappy food (which I tend to do). If you have time (which by the sounds of your schedule these days maybe you don't), try to go for a walk each day. When you first reach for food, have water instead as that sometimes can stop the hunger.

Most importantly - don't beat yourself up!

    Hope you're well!
    Em :)

  3. Diversion?

You know the worst time of day, right? Have a health snack 20 minutes before that time, schedule meeting and your most labor intensive work for that time and plow ahead.

Just an idea, good luck to you.

  4. Do a day of mushies and protein shakes. That seems to shock the body enough to reverse the scale again.

  5. I think this is where a tightish band can be counter productive, in my experience. Make sure you get enough protein in, earlier in the day, and that should help with the hunger at 2pm.

I know how you feel! Some days I can't eat at all till 4pm, then graze for hours.

But I've just recently found that having protein before I'm hungry really stops that "gotta raid the fridge" feeling. Or at least slows it down a bit.

Also, are you having enough fluids during the day? Even if you can't eat too much in the morning, drinking water is good for you.

And try to avoid slider foods.

All easier said than done, I know!

  6. Definitely bolster up on the liquids -- and maybe plan out what your snacks will be in advance and stick to the plan? You'll be through this in no time -- don't worry! :)

  7. Oh Cara, I don't have advice for you but I'm sending you a big hug. These periods are scary, aren't they? Hang in there and just keep plugging along, dearie.

  8. PS in the NYC photo, I'm in the purple cardigan. With the ridiculously red cheeks (result of one (1) margarita).

  9. Cara, do you have control over what you have in the house? In other words, can you ensure that you only have healthy things around? Other than that, everybody else's suggestions were really good. Just try to be in the moment and conscious about what you're doing. It can be hard, but it CAN be done. In the past when I would diet, I would stop, take a breath, and ask myself if I was TRULY hungry or simply reacting to something, bored, stressed, or just overall emotionally eating. Good luck, hon. I know if ANYBODY can do it, YOU can.

  10. I agree with all of the supportive comments... maybe try to eat a 'heavy' protein as soon as you can in the day?
I know you have tons more experience than me-- but I am just going on my experience so far: the heavier and fattier the protein, the more I feel full.
I'm talking ground beef meatballs and sauce... or maybe some full fat cheese and deli sliced ham or other deli sliced meat?

I hope that would help a bit.

Whatever: you are doing GREAT and a little bump in the road is just that.... hang in there.

  11. Lots of great suggestions already posted -- try eating something every 3 hours or so to keep the hunger at bay and lots of fluids. Also a great quick snack is a scoop of protein powder mixed with some of your favourite yogourt.

Something that also works for me is this: I drink a glass of water and wait half hour. If after the half hour is up and I still want/need something I'll have it. I often forget by the time the half hour is up.

This is just a little blip along the way, you'll be back on track in no time.

    Take care.

  12. Yana's advice to me was to post everything you eat so you feel accountable! I love Fat Bastard's advice about scheduling mtgs or whatnot for your tricky times. I've never heard that but it just makes so much sense! Band basics, btw, don't eat unless you're hungry, no liquids with foods, chew chew chew, protein first, watch out for caffeine and sugar early on as that'll make you hungry later. that's true for me at least.
good luck. we're all here rooting for you!
