Have you ever looked at a gravestone? On it you will find the date a person was born - and the date that person died. In between is a dash. This small symbol signifies a persons whole existence. When it comes time for my dash to be chipped in, I want to know I lived a full and wondrous life.

Poetry 101

So because I have no new band news, I thought I would pop these into a post today. Just kind of gives you a little more background on me:

This first poem - I mentioned it once before -  won runner-up in a National Poetry Competition and it was then picked up and published in an Anthology called Wind, Moon, Sun and Wind (one book per title.) Mine went in the book named Moon. If you come back at me later and ask exactly what this poem is about... I will tell you honestly, I have no idea. It took me about a half-hour to write, is kind of off the wall (but I was reading a lot of horror novels - maybe it's influenced by that lol) and classifies as a fluke - by that I mean I wasn't really even into writing poetry - fiction was my thing and yet I had it published. One thing I should add is: I lost the actual book during one of our many, many moves over the years and I haven't been able to procure another :( The titles are from memory so if I'm wrong about that.. I apologise.

SOUL DEMISE

On the tips of the breeze that wash over me
Come the tell-tale signs of summer dark
And I lay on my spine looking skywards
Waiting for the clouds to whisper their heart-felts

Pressing pockets of storms for my keepsake
Breathing heartbeats that pound wild in pain
I find souls such a curious object to think
And that spirits go join the surrounds

Hazy chariots shadow my vision
Bringing forth the bodies I lust
I arise, stretch out my flesh to them all
They have come to join the enclave

I cover their consciousness with mine
Nooks and crannies I find and I fill
For the soldiers of misfortune have bide me
And forthwith I come make them my own

This 2nd one is just a silly one I wrote for my father when he retired as an Inspector in the Police Force. He was leaving with mixed feelings - taking an early retirement... and had just had a knee re-construction. I framed it and presented it to him and he loved it.  It pretty much says it all.........

ODE TO LLOYD

It's finally happened
The day is now here
Retirement is imminent
I no longer Fear

Too much time on my hands
Please - I've plenty to do
There's fish that need catching
Twelve year scotch to work though

I can read the newspaper
For three hours straight
Take lazy day lunches
No bosses await

Resurrect long unusued
Handyman skills
I'm not so decrepit
Now where are my pills?

Two stainless steel knees
A newfound passion for life
I can now fill the days
Harassing my wife

But she got me again
It's just as I'd feared
A long list of errands
Has suddenly appeared

As for everyone else
(At great risk to my heath)
I'm officially retired -
Go do it yourself!

Kay that's it from me, folks. If you're still awake after reading.. well done lol. See you again soon. xxx

  10. I enjoyed both poems, thank you for sharing them... I find poetry a little intimidating, despite the fact that I was an English major in college. These were botha lovely read.
