It's been beautiful weather here lately, though still quite hot. We headed down to Palm Beach again with Riley and Jake in tow (the kids wanted to jump off the newly built jetty) and ....... I have an NSV here. For the past 15 years or so.. no way would you catch me in public in a bathing suit. No way, no how. I used to cover up for all and sundry except maybe here around our pool in front of the kids (but even then would wear a sarong in the pool to 'cover' me.) I left MOTH in charge of the bags and towels, happily ensconced under the shade of the massive pylons and up I went - in just my bathers in front of dozens of sun-bronzed teens and people of all ages - and climbed that jetty, dived off, and swum with the boys to the pontoon that was 60 - 70 meters away. I (we) climbed that sucker of a ladder (with the bottom rung at sea level... .) and dived, and climbed and dived and climbed and well, I climbed and dived off that pontoon about 8 times!
Jake and I were talking later. He said to me, "Thanks for taking us out today: and mum. It was really cool that you came with us in the water... even diving and swimming with us." And there you have it...in times gone by I was the frumpy mum sitting there covered up, with a hat on reading.. not ever daring to get out in the water. Ever! No way could I have swum that amount, climbed that ladder so many times (if I could have even hauled myself out and up in the first place... very unlikely) and mucked around with the kids like I did today 30 kilos ago. It was a mark of self-achievement and I can't tell you liberating it is to finally get out there with the children and just 'do' stuff. Seriously.
The Palm Beach Jetty - the little black head on the far left in the water under the jetty is Riley
View in the opposite direction - look how calm it is!
It looks like - but I'm not jumping for joy just yet - that I might have a winner in this whole 1200 calorie per day thing - thanks to you girls and your advice. I showed a marginal drop below my lowest weight recorded and while it wasn't much.. it's the first time the scale has moved down in a month. Let's see if anything more happens tomorrow. And Vanessa, I took your challenge to walk 20 minutes each day. Done, done and done - three days running. Whoo. Thanks for putting it out there, Nessa. You have a few of us doing it now.
Tomorrow is Australia Day here in Aussie land. It's meant to be a day when we reflect on what we have achieved so far and rejoice in our gorgeous land - (Australia Day, January 26, is the anniversary of the arrival of the First Fleet of 11 convict ships from Great Britain, and the raising of the Union Jack at Sydney Cove by its commander Captain Arthur Phillip, in 1788) BUT since it's a day off work lol most people use it as an excuse for a good ol' piss up! We bbq snags, break out the thongs and eat and drink ourselves silly, while enjoying time with our mates. We will probably do this too earlier in the day, but the night is going to be full of fireworks in Perth. One of the local city radio stations play music designed to accompany the fireworks so we all take a radio, turn it on and have our torches handy to shine in the sky....We are taking a picnic, finding a spot near the casino (we are going with a friends and their kids) and planting ourselves. The fun will be fighting the traffic home again! It gets rather clogged lol. Still, I'm looking forward to it.
HAPPY AUSTRALIA DAY ALL MY AUSSIE BLOGGER BUDS!!

My goodness Cara, are you training for the Olympics!! Ironwoman perhaps.. Good for you... and thanks so much for your post.. the band and exercise do go hand in hand.. Aussie Day sounds like a blast (sort of the kind of stuff we do on the Fourth of July).. hugs to you.
ReplyDeleteHappy Australia Day! That is a gorgeous land judging by those pics. And i was really touched by your son's comments. You *should* be in a swimsuit at the beach because you are totally rocking the band. I hope the new 1200 calorie diet continues to work out for you!
ReplyDeleteWow, I had tears in my eyes when I read what your son said! That is an amazing NSV, AMAZING! Happy Australia Day, enjoy!
ReplyDeleteLoved your post and the joyous feeling about spending time swimming with the kids.
ReplyDeleteSo when you "break out the thongs" are those the panty thongs or the thongs you put on your feet. I'm sure MOTH would love the panty thongs. HA HA!
I have a young fellow from Australia who works in our office and every January 26th brings in Lamingtons for us to celebrate. I love them and all the coconut. Happy Australia Day!
Good job getting in the water with the kids Mum!! ;-) I'm so proud of you!!
ReplyDeleteHappy Australia Day from this American! :)
ReplyDeleteAnd I'm glad you have been able to experience this new NSV of getting in the water with the kiddos! Yea!!!
OOOOH! Palm Beach looks beautiful. Yay for you Cara playing in the water & sporting your suit - I bet you looked gorgeous!
ReplyDeleteLooks beautiful and good for you for getting out there Cara!!! So glad you are having such a wonderful time with your family. And SO glad the scale is moving!! xoxo
ReplyDeleteCongrats on the NSV! That's what I'm looking forward to most of all, being able to do all that fun stuff w/my daughters. Glad to hear the scale is starting to move too. I'm not Australian but Happy Australia Day to you!
ReplyDeleteCara, Australia Day sounds like a wonderful time! I am so happy for you being able to get out and swim with the kids. Isn't that what we all want? To be normal and live life instead of watching it pass us by? I love the photos, I hope to visit there very soon :)
ReplyDeleteGood for you! Losing weight is bringing you closer to the kiddos. A monumental NSV.
ReplyDeletewoohoooooo! aren't these emotional as well as freedom gains great! It is so hard to understand until you get there how much taking off these layers of fat also removes layers of inhibition. The increased freedom brings on more activity and finally we start rolling the ball away from gaining and lose even more fat and fear. Now if we can just remember these moments when faces with food temptations :)
ReplyDeleteWay to go you! and Happy Australia Day.
Wow, such beautiful pictures!
ReplyDeleteWhat an awesome moment with Jake. :) I'm glad you're no longer the "frumpy mom" and join in the fun!!
Happy Australia day and what a great NSV. That is the biggest reason I got the lap band so I could enjoy things like that with my son ?:-)
ReplyDeleteCan I move in with you? That's beautiful!!!!!
ReplyDeleteCongrats on your NSVs and your SVs. You are showing me just how to do it! :)
Amy
Gorgeous pictures, and even more amazing NSV! It is so sad the time we wasted overweight. But, no more! I can just imagine the look on your sons face when he thanked you for participating with them. You can't put a price tag on that sincerety, and it's worth whatever you had to do to get there. I am so happy for you! Happy Australia day... be good tonight... or not... :)
ReplyDeleteHappy Australia day! So glad to hear the 1200 calorie plan may have kick-started things for you. Still need to do my 20 minute walk today, but it's on the list. Enjoy your holiday tomorrow! ps what's a snag?
ReplyDeleteAwww Cara I had tears in my eyes reading this! If that's not the best reason to have gone through with lapbanding, I don't know what is :)
ReplyDeleteHappy Australia day, lovely lady! xxx
that is just an amazing NSV!! What a great memory for Riley !! SO PROUD OF YOU !!! It took me a while to understand why it was that you were on holiday in the middle of January..figured it out though..it so bizarre and cool to share experiences with someone else on the other side of the world !!
ReplyDeleteHappy Australia Day !!
One of the things I'm looking forward to is just being more adventurous and not being afraid to try new things. It sounds like you had a blast.
ReplyDeleteHappy Australia Day!

Happy Australia Day too Cara. Awesome NSV's on the jumping, swimming, climbing....and I am sure your kids are so proud of you. I am around, but not commenting to much as I am computerless at the moment, so sneaking a few moments here and there at work....but believe me I am reading! xx
ReplyDeleteWhat a great time you had Cara!! Sounds like your son's were just as happy to have you join them as you were to be there!!
ReplyDeleteWow, what a feat!! All that swimming, climbing, diving, etc. If I didn't have such a fear of dark water, it almost makes me want to join you in the fun!!
Happy Australia Day!!
Fantastic NSV!!!! It is funny how our weight holds us back - sometimes it is not all about the size but about having the courage to join in :-)
ReplyDeleteCara that is a Fabulou NSV!!! You go girl!!!
ReplyDeleteHey there lovely lady! I LOVE LOVE the pic of you in the pool. This post really speaks to me because that's exactly what I do - I sit on the sidelines and don't particpate with my kids. That's exactly what I want to accomplish with this severence I'm going to take. I want to participate in memories I make with my kids. Including swimming in the pool!!! The pics you posted are gorgeous. while its cold and yucky here - I'll be dreaming of the beaches in Australia when I need a peaceful moment thanks to you! :) Hugs sweet lady! And thanks for commenting on my blog. I always appreciate your comments and support.
