What's going on with this bugger of a band of mine? One day I have no trouble eating then the next I have trouble with the most simple things. What happened this evening rates on the fun factor at about oh, minus 100. Dozy here is still having trouble with No 3 on the list of Do's and Don'ts I was given. That is... DO NOT EAT STEAK!
I cooked up the most delicious stir fry with tender beef strips tonight. Sat down with the family to eat, and managed maybe three bites then uh oh..... something felt wrong. I tried to persevere with my small bowl of food, managed maybe another bite and found it to be a no go. Nothing else was going down. I ended up giving the rest to MOTH (Man of the House.) All food gratefully received he says. Ha!
What I ate came up - at least the last few bites. So I gave it a half hour and my stomach was grumbling. Tried some instant mashed potato with sour cream. Nope. Gave it more time. Tried some Greek yoghurt. Double nope. Nothing was going down and staying down. Then the pain started. Right in under my breastbone and through to my back. The ribs on my left side back and front started to ache. I was pretty sure by now I had some steak stuck. Help!
I then ended up with a stomach ache and desperate thoughts of a trip to emergency had me flinging stuff out of the medicine box in panic. I thought back to when I had that horrible stuck episode in Tasmania.. and how I managed to finally shift the sausage with a few sips of coke. Since I was shit out of luck on the coke front I went with a fizzy Mylanta (for upset stomachs.) I plopped a tablet in the water, watched it do it's magic and after a fair bit of sipping and P'bing, up came the offending item. See that pic of the fake fish up there? The shape of it that's stuck in the plug-hole? That is almost the same shape of a large piece of unchewed steak that I had managed to let slip down. Dumb, dumb. At the same time - instant relief. Now, I'm hungry again but since I've probably irritated things, might do with a liquid diet for a bit. A cup of coffee sounds about right.
So there you have it. Chew your food really, really well! Can't stress this enough baby-bandsters. But if the worst should happen and you get stuck - I think something fizzy might be the key. Just take small sips and see where it takes you. It sure can't hurt.
Bye for now
Cara

Man that sounds painful! Sure am glad the fizzy stuff worked for you. I will have to give that a try next time I have that stuck feeling.
ReplyDeleteI'll need to remember the fizzy stuff. Not looking forward to being stuck, but I know I don't pay much attention to chewing, so will have to practice. Good luck on the pretty smile.
ReplyDeleteHi Cara.. so often I read about the stuck "steak" episode.. so much that I have not had any steak since banding for fear of what you just described. I have read that taking papaya enzyme tablets will assist with the relief and digestion of the stuck food.. don't have a personal experience to endorse this though.. I have had one Pb'ing experience and that has scared me enough to chew the hell out of anything I even suspect to catch the sides of my esophagus.. glad that you are OK. and didn't need to go to the ER.. be well Cara .. love ya!!
ReplyDeleteOh No!! that sounds miserable. Thank goodness you got it out and didn't have to deal for much longer with it. Thanks for the reminder to chew, chew, chew.. it's so easy to forget when you are eating something so delicious!
ReplyDeleteOuchie is right Cara. I'm glad you were able to get it back up. HUGS
ReplyDeleteOuch! As a fetus bandster (I'm not even a baby bandster yet), I appreciate you sharing this experience with us. Definitely something to be warned about and once I'm banded, I will CERTAINLY be keeping something fizzy in the house. Hope today goes better for you.
ReplyDeleteI have used Coke myself in emergencies at restaurants--my fiance always gets Coke, so it's available too me. I'm glad you're better.
ReplyDeleteO NO! Sounds like we were both in the same boat yesterday! I feel your pain...but we both learned lessons, to chew chew chew or we will not be happy with the end results! Hang in there! xxoo
ReplyDeleteOh no...I am craving solids, but I am scared as well! I hope you are feeling better. I don't think I will even try to attempt to eat a lot of things, i am "deathly" afraid of it coming up..
ReplyDeleteBack to the basics... chew, chew, chew. It's amazing how we forget sometimes. I've had to remind myself, no MY BAND has reminded me, almost everyday since my fill last week- that I need to CHEW. I've been the sliming queen this past week. Last night at dinner, my teenagers sat down and started making gagging sounds premptively. Cute. Sorry about your painful episode there. Hope your week gets better!
ReplyDeleteI feel your pain on that one. Good to know that fizzy drinks help. I have never had that bad of a PB episode but good to know in case I do
ReplyDeleteThanks :-)
I'm sorry for the stuck episode but was laughing hard at the picture :)..too bad it is not of a cow. I might try the diet coke the next time I get one.
ReplyDeleteYEEEOUCH! Glad that sucker finally came out. Maybe you should start selling Coke with a new label... something for bandsters and our stuck episodes, lol.
ReplyDeleteThese bands have minds of their own don't they?
ReplyDeleteI've been stuck on yogurt, yes.. Yogurt! once this week... but yesterday afternoon I choked down a huge (by bandster standards) burrito and nothing...would have never known I had a band!
Sorry for the pain and scare!
Steak has always been a no-no for me. And I, too, will have easy band days, and then some really tight band days. I don't know what causes it but I have learned that if I get sick from eating something I generally have to take it easy (liquids) the rest of the day.
ReplyDeleteOh nasty - the trials and tribulations of having a band LOL
ReplyDeletealthough I laughed at the fizzy can't hurt comment (because it can burn the crap out of you) LOL
Yikes lady!! Glad that you were able to resolve the problem. Me and steak( no matter how much I would love a med rare one right now) are not on friednly terms. My last attempt although nowhere as bad ended up with a return to nature episode as well.
ReplyDeleteTake it easy on your pouch for a day or two.
2 years on and I'm still a bit of a slow learner and will occasionally try to eat things I know I should steer clear of (bread usually!). I've currently just started my week of reacquainting myself with the toilet bowl (ie TTOM). So not happy this week!
ReplyDeleteOh dear, Cara, that's HORRIBLE! I HATE getting stuck. Strange how different we all are -- so far I've never had a problem with steak. Chicken a time or two and pork, but not steak. And yes, I too find myself not chewing properly and getting lucky that I don't get stuck. I catch myself and then try to slow down.
