So I decided to take the proverbial 'Bull by the Horns' approach to this ongoing weight loss (or lack of it) of mine. I sat and had a think about it yesterday: and I came to the conclusion that if I really want to kick start it again I have to do something a bit different. I've been faffing around for a few weeks now and it's time to get serious .
First thing I did was have a look around the net for a food tracker. I came across an American one which looked like exactly what I was looking for but then found it was a bit like reading Swahili in the way that it does your weight in pounds and water in ounces and half the foods we have here in Australia, well, it wasn't coming up in the lists. SO... I had another search and found Calorie King.. it's Australian and just perfect for the job.
I entered all my details and found out a couple of interesting things. One was that for my height weight ratio I should be sitting on about 1600 calories a day. Say what!! That sounds like an awful lot to me. So with a bit more reading I then found if you want to push the weight loss along a little quicker, drop that reading by 200 calories a day (and it should give a half a kilo loss for a week.. hmm we will see!! cos honestly, I want a bit more than that.) But the thing is..... up until yesterday I found I have been having enough trouble getting in 1000 per day. I did a couple of back menus and found out I have been eating wayyyy under what I should be. I set it up for 1200 calories per day (I think this is much better instead of 1400.. well, for me anyway) and I had up until this point only been eating anywhere between 750 to 900. Oops!
I would like to say that eating under my calorific intake is what is making me stagnate .. but I think perhaps it's more the picking I have been doing. That said.. eating NOT enough calories per day is definentely not helping. So my new plan of action is to graze.. but on good stuff not bad. I haven't been eating breakfast (as I mentioned.. I'm not very hungry up till around lunch time..) but now I will push myself to have something. Then a small snack then lunch and another small snack and yadda yadda.. you know the rest. Hopefully I can get those calories up enough.
I'm also kicking the exercise in the pants. Tomorrow the kids go back to school so with my normal routine back in place I should be able to get some walking in. I read about you guys doing the gym thing and the 5k walks and boot camp and I really know then I should be getting off my butt and out there. Right now, I'm just not. Most of my exercise comes from running around doing whatever it is I do during the day. Not much time to sit.. and this has probably help me at least maintain my weight.
So.... let's see if this new approach helps at all. It probably won't but I'm not being defeatist just realistic.. I know myself and after a few weeks the Calorie King thing will probably fall by the way-side.. as I mentioned in one of my very first posts I am shocking at keeping a calorie count with the whole fat vs carbs vs sugar etc but I will at least give it a try. No harm in that. I also have to ring Angela, my dietitian, to find out exactly what calories I should be having in a day. Sometimes these sites just give a broad spectrum number without counting what the person is like in real life.
Hope you all had a fab weekend. Feeling much more positive at this end and ready to tackle life again and all it brings .

Even if it doesn't last it is good to shake things up - I haven't posted on my blog yet as I am too depressed about the 1.2kg I gained this week (of course my own fault) but that is how much I should gain during the first trimester not in the first second LOL
ReplyDeleteCara,
ReplyDeleteMy surgeon told me that I should be eating between 800-1000 calories a day with the band with about 70gms of protein....he said if I started exercising LOTS I could up it to 1200. I try to use calorie king, but over here we get heaps of UK and US foods...so it's a mixture and no online site fits all the foods! grrrrr,
Hey Cara, this sounds great. I am using fitday.com as my calorie tracker. Most of the food is generic and I can create my own foods for the foods I eat all the time that aren't on there.
ReplyDeleteI eat anywhere from 1000 to 1400 calories a day. I don't know if that's too much, too little, just right. My average is 1200. But it feeeels right, if you know what I mean.
Sometimes tho I just feel baffled by all the stuff I have to think about all the time to lose weight. Sheesh! So tracking does help me.
Do you think you'll try a week or two of being "dedicated" to the tracking and a certain amount of exercise and see this as a test? Sounds like a good way to dip your toe into a new routine.
Cara - I go through fits where I use the daily plate (similar site it sounds like). It helps get your head together about how much you're really eating. I think we're all beating yourselves up because we're eating what seems like too much, but we're really not. Keep it up and hopefully you'll get some scale movement- I think I need to do the same as my number hasn't budged in what seems like weeks.
ReplyDeleteYeah I use calorie king periodically too. I try to keep my calories between 1000-1200.
ReplyDeletehahha, another language for sure! that is so interesting that you have been eating under 900 calories! I agree that 1400 or 1600 sounds like a lot. 1200 will be good. Keep us posted...but I know you will!
